Full Metal Jacket (Deluxe Edition) [Blu-ray]Stanley Kubrick’s 1987, penultimate film seemed to a lot of people to be contrived and out of touch with the ’80s vogue for such intensely realistic portrayals of the Vietnam War as Platoon and The Deer Hunter. Certainly, Kubrick gave audiences plenty of reason to wonder why he made the film at all: essentially a two-part drama that begins on a Parris Island boot camp for rookie Marines and abruptly switches to Vietnam (actually shot on sound stages and locations near London), Full Metal Jacket comes across as a series of self-contained chapters in a story whose logical and thematic development is oblique at best. Then again, much the same was said about Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, a masterwork both enthralled with and satiric about the future’s role in the unfinished business of human evolution. In a way, Full Metal Jacket is the wholly grim counterpart of 2001. While the latter is a truly 1960s film, both wide-eyed and wary, about the intertwining of progress and isolation (ending in our redemption, finally, by death), Full Metal Jacket is a cynical, Reagan-era view of the 1960s’ hunger for experience and consciousness that fulfilled itself in violence. Lee Ermey made film history as the Marine drill instructor whose ritualized debasement of men in the name of tribal uniformity creates its darkest angel in a murderous half-wit (Vincent D’Onofrio). Matthew Modine gives a smart and savvy performance as Private Joker, the clowning, military journalist who yearns to get away from the propaganda machine and know firsthand the horrific revelation of the front line. In Full Metal Jacket, depravity and fulfillment go hand in hand, and it’s no wonder Kubrick kept his steely distance from the material to make the point. –Tom Keogh

A Kubrick Classic in Hi-Def by Honest Opinion
There are not many movies worth purchasing again just because they’re now available in Blu-Ray, but this is one of them. The message of Kubrick’s Vietnam War drama is more poignant when seen in all its original splendor. Don’t miss you chance to experience the haunting soundtrack and imerse yourself in a forgotten time of US history. Who knew is was all shot in England!

FULL METAL BLU-RAY by Mig Bates
Just like the original. Just what i expected. this is the one with the better features GET THIS VERSION. the Hi-Def on older movies is a tough thing to get looking and sounding good. they did pretty good with this one.

half good, half bad by Mark bennett
Full metal Jacket is really two movies in one. The first movie is a very realistic journey through the boot camp process for the marines. The reason why its so realistic is that Kubrick found a DI who could act and let the process run as if it were real. The only flaw in it is the murder-suicide at the end. Its just not realistic. It would have been more belevable as an ordinary suicide. The other thing that didn’t quite catch is that DIs and the process don’t just punish the weak. They go after the strong ones too.

The second half of the movie is worthless. The main character is suddenly made a journalist in Vietnam for a handful of pointless scences hanging around base and then just as suddenly is pushed into fighting in an infantry squad in Hue. All the realism of the early part of the film is lost. Suddenly we have Rambo running around with the big gun that never needs ammunition. We have marines advancing into a city of Hue that looks like Stalingrad. While Hue might have looked like this after the marines cleared the city, its kind of a major mistake to make it look like this BEFORE they cleared it. Everything about the “combat” scenes is wrong.

And what does everything build to. Pity for a female Vietnamese sniper. The leads spend more time whining, crying and acting like idiots over the sniper than they did over their own dead.

The only positive thing I can say about the second half the film is that its missing all the unrealistic “soldiers talk about the war” scenes that fill most every other movie about vietnam.

Watch the film for the first half and shut it off when they get to Vietnam.

As far as blu-ray goes, this film doesn’t deserve it and doesn’t benefit from it. It might as well have been on DVD.

FULL METAL JACKET by Paul Anthony Walsh
I THINK FULL METAL JACKET ON BLU-RAY IS AT IT’S BEST-
PICTURE QUALITY IS EXCELLENT AND THE AUDIO IS BRILLIANT-I LOVED THE STORY TO THIS FILM,BECAUSE IT SHOWS THE DARK AND REAL EVENTS OF WAR AND IT CAPTURES THE TERROR AND FEAR OF WAR FOR WHAT THE MEN HAVE TO GO THROUGH AND THE FEELING THAT YOU CAN BE KILLED AT ANY MOMENT-IT IS JUST A FANTASTIC MOVIE-I RATE THIS FILM A 10/10.FROM KRATOS-1977.

more than satisfied by Stuart Scipione II
The movie came earlier than predicted. It came in brand new condition at an amazing price nowhere else I looked could even touch. R. Lee is amazing, and this movie is an instant favorite. The Bluray makes even the most shocking or violent scenes so clear and beautiful it’s impossible to look away. I would definitely buy from this seller again.

Part 6 of 29 plus 1 ending.Description:This interactive FMV adventure has an all-star cast including Scott Cohen, Christopher Walken, Ossie Davis, Karen Allen, David Patrick Kelly, Burgess Meredith, John Rhys-Davies, Paul Giamatti, and Jimmie JJ Walker.
The game also features music from the Blue Oyster Cult.It is Manhattan in the year 2040.
You are Jake Quinlan, an ace reporter for the Virtual Herald; a daily cyberspace-distributed newspaper.
In this time of mind-blowing technologies, no one would have expected anything like this to happen.
They would have never anticipated that the Ripper would return over 150 years later, but he did, better than ever, eviscerating his victims and leaving no trace of his presence or method. This is a one of a kind FMV Adventure game that should not be missed.Additional Comments:Let me note that there might be a couple of slowdowns throughout the longplay, that’s Ripper being Ripper.
I tried to tweak so that it would run as best as it could.
It was a pain getting it to run on Win XP, let alone trying to run it while recording with screen capture.Lastly, let me note that the quality got butchered a little by YouTube, but it still looks pretty decent.

Add yet another notch in John Travolta’s bad-movie belt, and you’ve got Hollywood bankruptcy in full blossom. Go ahead, marvel at director Dominic Sena’s biggest money shot–a 360-degree pan as a robbery hostage is blown to bits by a bomb that pelts a surrounding SWAT squad with deadly ball bearings.

The plot, as if it matters: Travolta’s a slick, self-appointed antiterrorist who recruits a top-flight computer hacker (Hugh Jackman) to transfer a $9.5 billion government slush fund into a cluster of secret accounts. Berry’s the curvaceous bait who lures Jackman into the scheme; Don Cheadle’s an FBI agent hot on their tails; and an obligatory subplot turns Jackman’s daughter (Camryn Grimes) into an innocent bargaining chip. By the time a hostage transport bus is airlifted in the film’s not-so-thrilling climax, Swordfish will hold your passive attention or put you to sleep–it all depends on your tolerance for Sena’s brand of derivative bloodlust. It’s pornography of a sort, and efficiently mechanical, but you can bet good money that Berry and her costars didn’t cash their paychecks proudly. –Jeff Shannon

Not great, but entertaining by J. Farr
I think I mainly liked this movie for the great blu-ray clarity and the fact that it wasn’t your typical action movie. The picture is astonishingly clear and vivid through blu-ray conversion. John Travolta plays a fairly decent bad guy and the story has some twists that keep your attention. I thought the plot was rather ridiculous though, but definitely an original. The motive for the characters wasn’t just for a lot of money, like every other boring action movie, but the actual use of the money was the motivation. Good guy needed money to get his daughter back, bad guy needed money for anti-terrorism in his own demented way. Nothing great, but overall, a fun movie to watch on blu-ray.

Lousy, dumb, stupid Travolta/Berry/Jackman movie by G. Patrick Navarro
Wow, this was one terrible movie. The gratuitous violence during the car chase was absolutely over-done. The shady characters were typical stereotype thugs. Travolta just was as bad (acting-wise) as he was in The Punisher. In fact, almost a cliche’d carbon-copy.

Yeah, yeah, Halle Berry showed her great body to the detriment of some really sorry lines.

Hugh Jackman - well I guess I couldn’t get past Wolverine hacking into computer networks. The only time I paid any attention to Jackman was when he mentioned the DEC PDP-11; because I used to run that computer in the early 80’s.

Oh, and Sam Shepard, who played the Senator, really needs to change his one-dimensional characters he portrays in nearly every movie I’ve seen him in.

Bad, bad movie, with too many predictable scenes. But these actors got paid, and that’s all that really mattered. Heck, If I got paid for doing a lousy job at work, I [probably] wouldn’t care either…..then again maybe NOT.

Trying to be cool by S J Buck
This is a seriously flawed movie. It so wants to be cool, but misses the target by a long way. Sure its fits the critera of a high octane movie, but it has no soul. That said, for its time (2001) its not without intelligence. The concept of external non-government privately run organisations in the U.S. being involved in taking out terrorists etc is now a virtual fact (Blackwater).

Furthermore Travolta IS cool, especially in the riveting opening sequence. Halle Berry looks great and overall Hugh Jackman probably gives the best acting performance. But these plus points are spoilt by an over-reliance on car-chases, explosions and gun fights. This has all been done before and so much better, and with a lot more style. See Michael Mann’s Heat for one.

Overall then its an average, but hugely overblown blockbuster. If you like that sort of thing thats fine, and if its cheap you’ll probably buy it. I would rent first…

Jeff Shannon sucks. by Andrew C. Bernot
When I read the poorly written crybaby review Jeff Shannon used to inform potentially interested viewers I had to write my own review.

IF YOU WANT A REAL REVIEW READ MINE!

To start off the movie is far from dull. It’s very clever, and very thrilling, with quite an interesting storyline. The first few scenes include intense explosions and a couple assassinations. The storyline is unlocked bit by bit throughout the movie and brings you into the lifestyle of an exceedingly apparent upper class club-goer who does a little robbery and/or terrorism in the efforts of anti-terrorism on the side. Blah blah blah. You get the picture; my point being it’s an interesting movie through and through.

The hangup this Shannon guy has about Halle Berry’s tits is enough to make you sick. I don’t recall so well but maybe others do. What was it, maybe 5 seconds… One scene? 5 seconds of a little Barry [...] action people! Who really cares!? To say slightly pornographic is a total overstatement. I entirely fail to see any integrity in Jeff Shannon’s review.

I definitely feel sorry for the women who have to put up with men who are afraid of [...]. I couldn’t possibly care less if a movie has nudity in it or not but if a movie includes nudity I wont throw a fit about it. That’s what the federal rating systems are for. ‘Boohoo…’ Yes we get it. Thanks Jeff, buddy ol’ pal.

Anyway I think most nudity adds a bit of realism to a movie. Movies are not about the nudity but don’t try telling me you can walk through some of the wildest private clubs without seeing some nudity. Snap out of your stupidity and wake up to the real world. If at the end of the movie you still think it sucked well then you still got to see a slightly exposed Halle Barry. Good for you. Try not to lose sleep over it.

It’s a great movie and will have you guessing from beginning to end. Pay close attention to the script and maybe put to use at least half of your brain and by the end you’ll have enjoyed yourself to a well portrayed and well written movie. I have no doubt you’ll want to watch it again.

WAIT! I do have one complaint… Ahem… Ladies and gentleman Travolta does not act like he knows how to smoke or hold a cigar at all and his soul patch I could easily have done without. haha I had to say it. I love the long hair though! It worked great in Pulp Fiction. If you want, maybe take off a star but DON’T let it dissuade you from seeing the movie. It’s a great movie! Travolta’s soul patch I give 1 star, but the movie gets 5!

Sorry Jeff. I think you are in dire need of rewriting your review. I tried to hold back from saying anything too offensive or any defamatory remarks. I think the amazon review was of poor taste. Hey Amazon, hire me! I could run circles around this guy!

Meh by LuvBooks
Well, I’m seeing this movie about seven years after its premiere so that should tell you something. I’m pretty sure all the other reviewers have given a synopsis of the plot and storyline, so I won’t rehash that. I will just share my opinions. For having such an all-star, big bucks cast, this movie was incredibly uninspired. None of the actors, except maybe Hugh, seemed to embrace the characters. When a movie has a thin, boring plot, typically the portrayals are all that’s left in order for the audience to not feel cheated, but you could have taken aspiring theater majors and done the same thing. Travolta’s character was an arrogant psychopath with an ugly goatee. He played the maniac much better in Face Off. Hugh, oh how I love Hugh Jackman, but he just simply wasn’t believable as a hacker and even more so every time the camera showed him clicking keys.Halle…her part didn’t add anything to the story. I remember all the press about her “first naked shots,” and it was obviously a cheap ploy to get horny guys into the theaters. Don Cheadle, well I just expect that Don was in it for the payday. He has had much better roles.

The twist at the end isn’t really a twist when it’s been done soooo many times before. It reminded me of so many movies: Speed, Mission Impossible 1& 2, The Thomas Crown Affair, etc.

I had such high hopes too, b/c as everyone has said, the opening sequence was incredible. From John Travolta’s monologue (was that prophetic or what?) to the 180-deg explosion. I thought we were in for a ride. Such a letdown. It was extra punishment as I try to watch movies til the end unless I really hate it or find it offensive. So I suffered through.

So seven years later, I finally got to see what the hype was about, and it wasn’t worth it. I would usually say a movie sucked, but for Swordfish, it seems like something you’ll figure out about 30 minutes into it. I would only recommend Swordfish if you are bored or need background noise.

Eraser [Blu-ray]If you’re going to submit yourself to a dazzling example of mainstream action, this thriller is as good a choice as any. Eraser is a live-action cartoon, the kind of movie in which Arnold Schwarzenegger can survive nail bombs, hails of bullets, an attack by voracious alligators (”You’re luggage,” he says, after killing one of the beasts), and still emerge from the mayhem relatively intact. Arnold plays an “eraser” from the Federal Witness Protection Program, so named because he can virtually erase the existence of anyone he’s been assigned to protect. His latest beneficiary is an FBI employee (Vanessa Williams) who stumbled across a secret government group involved in the sale and export of an advanced weapon capable of shooting rounds at nearly the speed of light. Fantastic action sequences are handled with flair by director Charles Russell (The Mask), so it’s easy to forgive the fact that this movie is almost completely ridiculous. –Jeff Shannon

A catalog edition with some highs and some lows by J. Carboneras
Eraser is a good action flick but, is this edition good enough to satisfy the fans?

Well, technically this BD is quite strong. The master used is in very good shape and there’s nothing important that can distract us. The video quality is satisfactory with an average detail level and a little softer picture.
Audio track isn’t as agressive as we can hear in newer productions but the action sounds vibrant enough to feel the movie.

The low point is obvious: there’s no extra content. Well, most of us like to dig a little inside the production, so this issue it’s disappointing but, overall, the more important thing is the movie and Warner did their homework right with that.

For a catalog title Eraser is a thumb up.

Not my favourite by Dumb Blonde Reviewing
There’s just something about Arnie movies that always grabs me, and makes me want to watch them. I’ve seen a few that definitely haven’t been my favourites, and Eraser is one of them. I feel the more that I see films of Arnie’s that I haven’t seen before, the more I love the ones I’ve seen loads of times - Terminator, Twins, True Lies etc.

The storyline is in no means OTT. It doesn’t have the intriguing aspect of Total Recall for example. Arnie plays John Kruger, who specialises in ‘erasing’ people in the Witness Protection Programme. The film opens showing exactly how he does this, which is quite interesting.

But then Vannessa Williams (Lee Cullen) comes into it, and really, she just didn’t work. There was no chemistry between her and Arnie whatsoever. I don’t particularly want them to start ripping each other’s clothes off, but there was nothing between them at all. And in my opinion, it’s always off-putting when that happens.

The story then continues with John trying to keep Lee out of danger, and keep himself out of danger himself. There’s one totally ridiculous scene, where John is hanging from a plane door, about to directly fall into the path of the plane engine, which just so happens to be on fire! His parachute then gets ripped off, and he has to free fall after it, and also has to worry about the plane preferably not crashing into him. It’s a totally unbelievable scene, and definitely the highlight of the movie. But better done in Point Break I have to say. The alligator scenes also had me barely breathing, as they were amazing!

I just don’t think Eraser holds up with some of Arnie’s other movies. The last movie I saw was Total Recall, and while I didn’t understand it, and it left me racking what little brains I have, I still remember most of it. Eraser just comes across as a throw away movie, which is forgettable, and not that special up against his other movies.

ERASER blu-ray review by DIMEDAMAGE
since nobody is gonna review the blu-ray version i will.well to say the least this is a very clean transfer.by no means reference quality.but a nice clean transfer.if you are a fan of this movie you will be thrilled.the dolby true hd is where this blu-ray really shines.once again not reference quality but very satisfying.if you had the dvd this soundtrack blows it away.the only thing to note is when you pop this movie in, the movie starts right away so to get the dolby true hd soundtrack you have to go into the menu and change it because it uses the standard dolby digital 5.1 by default.which i thought was kinda weird but oh well.so if you like this movie get it!15.00 you cant lose!

An Excellent movie by Movie Fan
Great movie for Arnold. Vanessa did a great job as well. The Blu Ray transfer is Fantastic!!! A must for your collection.

Great Video - Fair movie by William Chipman
Others can argue over the quality of the movie. I just wanted to replace the non-anamorphic DVD with a better fit for my projector/PS3 setup. The blue-ray copy doesn’t disappoint. The details are great (maybe a bit too good when it comes to the FX shots). Dark levels are good and the details definitely carry through. The movie auto starts to the menu on my PS-3. No previews or advertising is a bonus in my book. Just a press of Enter on the remote starts the movie with no fuss.

Average Rating

Inside Man (Widescreen Edition)Spike Lee scored his biggest hit to date with Inside Man, an unconventional thriller with fascinating details in the margins of its convoluted plot. The screenplay (by first-timer Russell Gerwitz) could’ve used a few more rewrites; it moves at a brisk pace but in hindsight a lot of it doesn’t make sense. That makes Inside Man more fun to watch than to think about afterwards (when you discover plot holes big enough to drive a truck through), but it’s curiously involving, especially as NYPD Detective Keith Frazier (Denzel Washington) struggles to outsmart a high-stakes bank robber (Clive Owen) who, along with a well-trained crew of accomplices, has seized control of a Wall Street bank, turning what initially looks like a hostage crisis into a personal crusade to expose some mysterious evil secrets. As you might expect from the director of Do the Right Thing, Lee seizes several satisfying opportunities to examine post-9/11 issues of racial prejudice and domestic terrorism, and the mysterious “problem solver” Madeline White (Jodie Foster), as eerily sinister as she is vaguely defined, is worthy of her own movie. With the benefit of his most stellar cast to date (including Christopher Plummer, Willem Dafoe and Chiwetel Ejiofor), Lee seems more interested in character details than well-crafted suspense, but that doesn’t stop Inside Man from being engrossing, subtly amusing, and quirky enough to qualify as a welcomed break from the formulaic thrillers that are Hollywood’s bread and butter.–Jeff Shannon

The perfect bank robbery quickly spirals into an unstable and deadly game of cat-and-mouse between a criminal mastermind (Owen) a determined detective (Washington) and a power broker with a hidden agenda (Foster). Entertaining heist flick with some great back story by worldontilt
Very entertaining film with some spot on acting. Denzel is always strong, and thoroughly enjoyed Jodie Foster’s character. Clive Owen was a big surprise for me as I normally am not a huge fan, but thought he was great to watch. The film plays a bit with some rashomonesque story telling and flashes, and it’s intriguing to see the plot play out. A little bit long towards the end, but usually Spike Lee films are. The ending was a bit too pat for my tastes as well, but very much enjoyed it overall. Watched via Amazon on-demand as well, which worked pretty well for me.

Great Movie by gregsdealsnsteals2
Denzel is great in this movie, as he is in them all. The plot is a little far fetched, but worth the watch.

DENZEL & SPIKE HIT ONE OUTTA THE PARK AGAIN! by Bambi Shangri-La
As expected, Denzel Washington is in excellent form. I cannot even imagine him being any better, considering the body of work he has amassed during his career. Washington was eerily on point in “Malcolm X”, smoothly sensual in “Mo Better Blues”, and so intense in “Training Day” that he made me want to marry a thug!

In this flick, he exhibits everything that makes Denzel a master at his craft. His character is arrogant, thuggish, and intuitive. While I’m not a fan of director Spike Lee’s choice of projects over the years, I find his crisp cinematography, inventive camera angles, intelligent editing, and moving jazzy soundtracks very impressive and a dominant thread in all of his films. The growth in these areas are evident here, exhibiting an inter-dependent and mutually beneficial relationship in this, Washington and Lee’s fourth film together.

As for the other characters, Jodie Foster’s talents are wasted - she just coasted through the film, with overtones of Clarice in “Silence of the Lambs”. It seems as if she was included so that the movie trailer announcer could say “Academy Award Winner” twice! As for Clive Owen, this is the best that I have ever seen him, as charismatic and sympathetic as Hannibal Lechter. Chiwetel Ejiofor holds his own against the dominant Washington, giving the star the requisite amount of support and respect. The only person that I found totally out of place was that actress was who played Denzel’s girlfriend. It took a lot more time than I usually allot to researching my reviews to find out who she was. I think her name is Cassandra Freeman. She had one film role before this and IT SHOWS! Her whole role could have been portrayed just as easily over the phone. In addition to Freeman’s “school play” acting skills, her part was non-essential to the plot and far too young for the maturing Washington. She is a full THIRTY YEARS YOUNGER than Washington! What the ….?! For some reason, Hollywood seems to thrive on the older-man-way-too-much-younger-woman theme, instead of giving these female roles to “les femmes d’un certain âge”. Look at whose dominating the box office and award shows: Helen Mirren (”The Queen”), Meryl Streep (”The Devil Wears Prada”), and Judi Dench (”Notes on a Scandal”), etc. I can see the director not wasting such a vapid role on a top actress but, either beef up the role to make it worthy of a Angela Bassett, or have the lines called in, “Charlie’s Angels”-style.

Denzel… Same charactor as always. Nothing new. by Brian Dowrick
As far as Spike lee films go, it’s one of his better ones, and… least racial. As far as Denzel Washington films go, it’s about the same as any other.
I got tired of Denzel after Crimson Tide. It seems he always has to have some racial element in his films. Here we get white cops who can’t help themselves but throw racial terms around, a Nazi Jewish “white” guy, and a condescending “white” Jodie Foster. Denzel, of course, is the untouchable, unwavering, incorruptible, follow-the-law, smarter-then-the-people-around-him, black man, told to bend the rules, or accused of bending the rules by his white bosses, and chiefs…. even the mayor. It’s the role he’s been in so many times before, that Training Day was actually a nice change.
The story is simple, and interesting enough to watch all the way through, but there are no real surprises, and no exciting parts. Everything just moves along at the same pace through the film. It’s more the interaction between the good actors that keeps this film flowing. Watch Ocean’s 11, or the Italian Job if you want to watch something actually worth watching.

Spike hits a home run by Dennis W. Wong
This film proven to be a hit at the box office for filmmaker Spike Lee. I usually avoid his films like the plague since I’ve grown tired of his preaching on race and the ills of this country but for once, he has delivered a solid, entertaining movie. The cast, for starters, is excellent. Denzil Washington, Clive Owen, Jodie Foster, Willem Dafoe, Christopher Plummer & Chiwetel Ejiotor really deliver the goods in this slick heist movie. Seemingly a heist film, this film is more than that and thank god, Lee steers away from his political preaching. If you’ve avoided his films in the past, do check this one out–you’ll probably like it.
